Dogs are social pack animals.
They protect babies because they have an instinctual desire to protect the pack, which is the family taking care of them.
Think of it like this. Wolves in the wild will work together to protect the pups.
- Dogs can hear, smell, and see babies, but they don't really know what a baby is, so it is shocking when dogs treat babies differently than adults. ... Additionally, if you keep the baby away from your dog, it may start to whine or bark at you.
Dogs are extremely loyal members of the family and just like humans they can experience a variety of different emotions - including jealousy.
This can especially be the case when someone new becomes a member of the family, such as a newborn baby and seems to get all the attention and affection..
- When you arrive home with the newborn, first greet your dog alone so it doesn't get excited and jump on the baby.
- Allow your dog to adjust to the smell, sight and sound of the baby for a few days before introducing them in closer proximity.
- After a few days, allow the dog to sniff the baby while controlled on a leash.
- While many dogs lick a human's face as a submissive gesture of appeasement, others do it to get a reaction from their humans.
- ... As such, a dog should never be allowed to treat a human baby as a puppy, including licking its face or bottom, for fear that the mothering could lead to dangerous behaviors.
